Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is counselling right for me?
A: If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or want to better understand yourself, counselling offers a safe, confidential space to work through your experiences and feelings.

Q: How long are sessions?
A: Sessions are 50 minutes, with flexibility if your needs require longer or shorter meetings.

Q: Can I access counselling online?
A: Yes. I provide secure online counselling for anyone in the UK, perfect if you can’t attend in person in Tyne and Wear.

Q: How many sessions will I need?
A: Every client is unique. Some find short-term counselling (6–12 sessions) helpful, while others benefit from ongoing support. We’ll review your progress regularly.

Q: How do I know my information is safe?
A: All records are stored securely and anonymously using client references. I operate fully in line with ICO and BACP ethical standards to protect your confidentiality.

Q;I've never had counselling before. What should I expect?

A:Starting counselling can feel like a big step, especially if it's your first experience. You don't need to prepare, have the "right" words, or know exactly where to begin. Our first session is simply an opportunity to get to know each other, explore what's bringing you to counselling, and discuss what you'd like to gain from the process. We'll move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Q:Do I need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling?

A:Not at all. Many people seek counselling because they're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, emotionally exhausted, or simply not quite themselves. Others come because they want to improve relationships, build confidence, or better understand their thoughts and feelings. You don't need to wait until things become unbearable before asking for support.

Q:What if I don't know what's wrong?

A:That's completely okay. Many clients begin counselling with a sense that something isn't quite right but struggle to put it into words. Together, we can explore what's happening without any pressure to have all the answers.

Q:What happens during the first session?

A:The first session is about understanding you, not analysing or judging you. We'll talk about what has brought you to counselling, what you'd like support with, and answer any questions you may have about the process. There is no expectation that you'll share everything straight away.

Q:Will I have to talk about things I'm not ready to discuss?

A:No. You are always in control of what you choose to share. Counselling isn't about forcing difficult conversations before you're ready. Trust develops over time, and we'll work together at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you.

Q:What if I become emotional during a session?

A:It's perfectly natural to experience a range of emotions during counselling. Some people cry, some laugh, some sit quietly while they gather their thoughts. There is no right or wrong way to respond, and you never need to apologise for how you're feeling.

Q:What if we don't feel like the right fit?

A:The relationship between counsellor and client is one of the most important parts of successful therapy. If, after meeting, you feel I'm not the right person for you, that's absolutely okay. Finding someone you feel comfortable with matters, and I want you to have the support that best meets your needs. This is why I offer a free 15 consultation to all new clients.

Q:Can online counselling be as effective as face-to-face counselling?

A:Yes. Online counselling offers the same confidential, professional support while allowing you to attend sessions from a space where you feel most comfortable. Many clients find they open up more easily when they're in familiar surroundings.

Q:Is everything I tell you confidential?

A:Confidentiality is a fundamental part of counselling. What we discuss remains private, with the exception of the limited situations required by law or where there are serious concerns about someone's safety. These boundaries will always be explained clearly before we begin working together.

Q:Will you tell me what I should do?

A:Counselling isn't about giving advice or making decisions for you. Instead, I'll help you explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences so you can make choices that feel right for your life and circumstances.

Q:Can I stop counselling at any time?

A:Yes. You are free to end counselling whenever you choose. If possible, it's often helpful to have a final session to reflect on the work we've done together and bring the counselling to a thoughtful close, but the decision is always yours.

Q:What if counselling doesn't work for me?

A:It's understandable to wonder whether counselling will make a difference, particularly if you've been struggling for a long time or have tried other forms of support. While no counsellor can promise specific outcomes, many people find that having a consistent, supportive, and non-judgemental space helps them develop greater self-awareness, resilience, and confidence in managing life's challenges.

Q:Do I need to prepare for sessions?

A:No preparation is necessary. Some weeks you'll have lots to talk about; other weeks you may not know where to begin. Both are completely normal. We'll start wherever you are that day. Some people like to reflect between sessions and bring their thoughts to session but this is not a requirement.

Q:How do I book my first appointment?

A:If you're thinking about taking the first step, you're welcome to get in touch. I'll answer any questions you have before booking, explain how online sessions work, and help you decide whether counselling with me feels like the right fit for you. There is no pressure or obligation, just an opportunity to explore whether this is the right next step.
