Client Experiences of Counselling
Starting counselling can feel like a big step. Many people feel unsure about what the process will be like or whether they will feel comfortable talking to someone new.
Reading about the experiences of others can sometimes help provide reassurance.
The reflections below are shared with permission and anonymously by clients who have attended counselling with me.
They reflect a range of experiences from adults and parents who have sought support for anxiety, relationships, trauma, neurodivergence and family challenges.
To protect confidentiality, identifying details have been removed.
Feeling Heard and Understood
"Having a safe space to talk without judgement made such a difference. Louise helped me understand patterns in my thinking that I hadn’t noticed before, and I now feel much more aware of how to manage my anxiety."
— Adult Client
"I knew within minutes that Louise really understood me. I had spoken to several counsellors before but didn’t feel the same connection. The support I’ve received has helped me through an incredibly difficult year."
— Adult Client
"Louise has an amazing way of picking up on things I hadn’t fully realised about myself. It helped me gain clarity and start approaching situations differently."
— Adult Client
Support with Anxiety and Overthinking
"The coping strategies we discussed have been incredibly helpful. Techniques like journaling and grounding exercises have helped me manage intrusive thoughts in a way I never could before."
— Adult Client
"I used to feel like my anxiety would just build and build. Now I have tools that help me slow things down and refocus when I feel overwhelmed."
— Adult Client
"The sessions helped me understand my thought patterns and how they affect my emotions. That awareness alone has been really powerful."
— Adult Client
Exploring Emotions and Past Experiences
"Talking about difficult experiences from the past was challenging at times, but Louise created a space where I felt safe enough to explore them."

— Adult Client
"I appreciated the patience and understanding throughout the process. I never felt rushed, which made it easier to open up."

Neurodivergent and SEND Support
"Having someone who understands autism made a huge difference. The support felt tailored to my experiences rather than trying to fit me into a standard approach."
— Adult Client
"As a parent navigating SEND challenges, it was incredibly reassuring to speak with someone who understands both professionally and personally."
— Parent
"The support has helped me better understand my child’s needs and how to navigate some of the systems involved in SEND support."
— Parent
Developing Confidence and Boundaries
"Counselling helped me recognise patterns in my relationships and learn how to communicate my needs more clearly."
— Adult Client
"I learned that I don’t have to change who I am for others to treat me better. Setting boundaries has been a huge step forward."
— Adult Client
"The sessions helped me see situations more clearly and feel more confident in my decisions."
— Adult Client
A Space to Reflect and Grow
"Sometimes just having someone impartial to talk to made all the difference."
